1. Visit a Garden
First up, take advantage of the National Open Garden Scheme. The NGS gives access to private gardens all around England and Wales. Monies raised through admissions, teas and cakes go to nursing and health charities. Twenty-seven gardens are open in Essex this July.
For example, Barnards Farm in West Horndon. The 22 hectares at Barnards Farm range from landscaped walks through young woodland to the precise detail of the Japanese garden. The more formal gardens including a parterre, herbaceous borders, a living wall and a vegetable garden are found nearer the house. While a walk through the managed landscape will take in the long avenue, a stream, ponds and the Euro wood.

3. Walk an Alpaca
Yes, you read that right. Madash Alpacas in Earls Colne, Essex offers three ‘Alpaca experiences’. First, the Alpaca Experience. This 90 minute experience includes meeting the Alpacas, feeding them and walking them. Second, Meet the Alpacas. This 60 minute experience includes meeting and feeding the alpacas. Finally, Kids Encounters. This 45 minute session includes meeting and feeding the alpacas in groups of up to 5 children.
