Finally, no list of Michelin star pubs in Essex is complete without mention of Tim Allen’s Flitch of Bacon in Little Dunmow. While The Windmill and Galvin Green Man have received Michelin Bibs, the Flitch of Bacon is the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Essex.
The restaurant’s name comes from a prize given at an old folk ritual, dating back to 1104. Historically, the winning couple is carried through the village in the Flitch Chair. You can still the chair at the Little Dunmow Parish Church. Indeed, the Flitch Trials continue in Great Dunmow to this day.
