May Days Out in Essex

Essex hosts a wide range of events throughout May. Of course, guided walks of Essex’s tremendous countryside are a feature. For example, families will love meeting birds of prey and observing nature’s creatures at Hyde Hall’s Wildlife Weekend. However, May’s finer weather means an even greater number of events.

1. National Garden Scheme Tours

Firstly, the National Garden Scheme operates garden tours throughout Essex. Since 1927, the NGS has donated over £50 million to some of the UK’s most important nursing organisations. NGS tours are an opportunity to visit public and private gardens, relaxing in the fresh air, while supporting charity.

2. Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Next, the region hosts a number of events for lovers of vehicles. From steam engines to aeroplanes to vintage cars, there’s something for all transport enthusiasts. For example, the Colne Valley Railway offers train rides and many family activities. Likewise the Duxford Air Festival offers family experience tickets and gold experience tickets to tailor your visit. Need more? Surely the Transport Extravaganza can satisfy the keenest transport enthusiast with its huge selection of cars, vintage motorbikes, and modern vehicles.

3. Old Fashioned Fun

Lastly, Essex offers a number of historically themed events. For instance, this month Hedingham Castle and Gardens hosts ‘A Vintage Affair’ with music and fashion from the 1940s, as well as a Jousting Tournament. In addition, English Heritage hosts ‘Meet the Toymakers‘ at Audley End House and Gardens. Come and play with Victorian toys and meet the toymakers who created them. And, of course, no old-time May days out in Essex would be complete without Morris Dancing.
